Managing Database Recovery

Many VME users reckon that they spend as much as 20% of their programming costs on writing SCL.

A great deal of this effort is spent writing procedures to dump the database, switch database journals and archive old journals. The quality of these procedures must be such that recovery from any contingency can be guaranteed.

To achieve this goal a surprisingly large amount of SCL has to be written.

The procedures not only have to call the relevant IDMS commands, they must also:

This work has to be done for all applications, including packages. It is difficult, expensive and unpopular work.

The SKYDD Recovery Management System does all this for you, and much more.

What is SKYDD?

SKYDD is a Recovery Management System which consists of two parts.

The first is a simple set-up routine which asks a series of questions about the database and its environment. From the knowledge gained from the answers it receives, SKYDD generates SCL procedures which perform all the tasks mentioned above.

The second part of SKYDD is the "Run Time" component which is called by the compiled SCL Dump Procedure generated from the set up routine.

Naturally, SKYDD keeps track of all the Dump Files, Journals and Journal Archive files created. It also provides comprehensive Display facilities which show, at any time, the names of all the files which have been created by SKYDD.

This information is displayed in an easy to read, logical format designed to make the recovery of a database after failure a simple matter.
